The Bridge
MUSIC & LYRICS BY DOUG SILVER and BOOK BY MICHAEL MEJIAS & ANDREW FRANK.
The Civil War has ended, and the Great Bridge is under construction . . .
In Manhattan, young and in love, Emily and Washington Roebling, Chief Engineer of the New York and Brooklyn Bridge, face opposition from all sides, as they dare to finish construction and secure their family’s place in history.
Meanwhile, in Brooklyn, when a boarding house landlord recants on their agreement, Shirley Robeling and her family build a Black community on the cul-de-sac across the road. As this new community grows, challenges surface to threaten Shirley’s leadership and hopes for a new place to call home.
The Bridge is part history, part urban fantasy. It is a view of the past that speaks to race, gender and the personal consequences of ambition and dreams.
