His full-length play, ghetto babylon, received the 2012 national latino playwriting award, and was a finalist for both the 2010 metlife national latino playwriting competition and the 2011 princess grace playwriting award. In 2013, it was produced by the dramatic question theatre at 59e59 theatres. Mr. mejias’ play for young audiences, waiting for lucy was presented by dqt as a staged reading at people’s united bank in 2016 and published by playscripts later that year. Mr. mejias is a 2019 NYSCA-NYFA playwriting fellow. Since 1999, he’s worked at the literary agency, writers house and has advocated for diversity in publishing. To that end, he founded the writers house intern Program which has, to date, placed over 300 of its graduates in entry-level publishing jobs, with over a third of those placed being from excluded groups. In 2017, he co-founded inkluded, a non-profit organization dedicated to recruiting, training, and placing talented people from diverse backgrounds in publishing, while also facilitating actionable discourse regarding the lack of representation in the industry. He designed and implemented the curriculum for inkluded academy, a free publishing course for college graduates from excluded groups. Launched this past summer, the academy has already placed half its graduating class in publishing jobs. Mr. Mejias is from the South Bronx.
